The Sardinian brook newt, Euproctus platycephalus, is endemic to Sardinia and mainly inhabits mountain streams, springs and pools. Leonardo Vignoli and collaborators have contributed to updating knowledge of its distribution and developing tools for a more reliable assessment of its conservation status.
Surveys carried out between 2010 and 2015 documented 57 populations, considerably more than the 14 previously considered in available assessments. This result highlights the importance of combining field surveys, literature, interviews and citizen-science data while accounting for the detection probability of a rare and elusive species.
